Is proper form mandatory when weight lifting?

So you are psyched up and motivated and ready to build your body. But if you stick with it for a while you will start to notice that there is a lot of advice in the bodybuilding world that contradicts one another. The reason for that is every one has different needs for the development of there body. In this article we will tackle the issue of whether or not strict form is mandatory?

So the argument is that if you do not use proper form during weight lifting you are liable to harm your joints, setting you up for injury and that you also may work unintended muscles. Advocates of this ideology state that when use proper form you preserve energy which gives you an extra push or pull. They state the better your form the better your results.

I can tell you from personal experience that this is not always true. I have been bodybuilding now for 15 years and I have discovered that there is room and even benefits from using improper form at times. The name of this technique is cheat reps.

In order to receive benefits from cheat reps it is imperative that you master the basic range of motions for every exercise. Learn the fundamentals first(proper form). As a beginner you should always move through the full range of motion. The better your form the less likely you are to hurt yourself. If you are unable to maintain strict form , it is suggested that you lower the amount of  pounds you are using for that exercise.

Once you have obtained mastery of an exercise and have been working out for at least six months then and only then would I recommend using cheat reps.

Cheat reps allow you to break plateaus as well as lift heavier weight so that you are able to put on more muscle mass. Arnold Schwarzenegger said it best when he stated “I would say the cheating technique. Even though I always believed in using strict form to isolate the muscles, I used the cheating method at some point in almost every workout because it allowed me to handle more weight , which allowed me to overload my muscles more so they would grow bigger.”

So in summary the answer is no, if you are pass the beginner stage of bodybuilding then you should think about adding cheat reps to your arsenal of bodybuilding techniques to constantly keep challenging your muscles.

  2. I also have concerns about zoos and havent visited one since I lived in Japan in high school. My host family took me to one and I was horrified at how small the enclosures were. Granted the enclosures in Rotterdam appear to be much bigger, they are still enclosures. Cecile Nichols Carly
